Northumberland has responded to the challenge of the NC500 by marking out a great route covering half that distance.  It takes in Bamburgh Castle (not to mention 19 more on the circuit), Holy Island and Kielder amongst many other attractions.  Based in Otterburn for three/four nights allows for two riding days to complete the circuit without backtracking and switching of hotels.  Full details on the forum.
